Course Structure

The program consists of 180 UK credits (ECTS 90 credits) distributed over one year full-time.

Classes are expected to be held three times a week, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

There is no dissertation at the end of the course. Instead, there is a Teaching and Research Portfolio module.

Teaching and Research Portfolio module challenges, you to create a comprehensive Integrated Teaching and Research Portfolio that demonstrates your ability to connect and align your teaching practices with your research endeavors. The portfolio will serve as a reflective and evidence-based showcase of your dual role as an educator and researcher, highlighting how these two domains inform and enhance each other.

Through this portfolio, you will:

  • Present your research contributions, including projects, proposals, or findings.

APLT620 TESOL Skills: Planning, Teaching, and Assessing 15 This TESOL course develops core teaching skills and language awareness with a focus on lesson planning, classroom management, and language systems. Students practice teaching the four skills through workshops and supervised practice while analyzing learners, evaluating materials, and exploring second language acquisition. The course integrates educational technology for diverse teaching contexts and emphasizes reflection to improve practice.
GRAD601 Research Methods in Humanities, Natural & Social Sciences 15 This course provides graduate students in TESOL and related fields with a comprehensive foundation in educational and social science research methods. Drawing from both the humanities and scientific traditions, the course equips students with the conceptual tools and practical skills to critically examine, design, and conduct research. Through engagement with qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods paradigms, students learn to evaluate research ethics, explore sampling and data collection strategies, and analyze data using various approaches. Special attention is given to applying research skills in multilingual and educational contexts.
APLT640 Language, Culture, and Communication in TESOL 15 This course critically explores the interconnections between language, identity, culture, and power within multilingual and multicultural contexts. Grounded in applied linguistics and TESOL, it introduces students to key theoretical perspectives and policy frameworks, including the European Union’s multilingual education agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). Students will analyse how language practices shape social inclusion, identity negotiation, and linguistic hierarchies in TESOL settings.
APLT650 Artificial Intelligence and Technology Integration in TESOL 15 This course explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and educational technologies in TESOL and multilingual education. Students gain critical knowledge and practical skills to use AI tools ethically and effectively, investigating adaptive platforms and automated feedback to support language learning. Emphasis is placed on designing learner-centered tasks that foster engagement, differentiation, and autonomy in diverse instructional contexts.
APLT660 Multilingual Pedagogies and Multimodal Literacy in TESOL 15 This course provides an in-depth exploration of multiliteracies in the context of teaching language and literacy to diverse learners in multilingual TESOL settings. It is designed to develop teachers’ professional knowledge of how meaning is created across multiple modes including linguistic, visual, spatial, oral, and digital, and to strengthen their capacity to critically analyse, design, and implement multimodal literacy instruction.

Course Duration

The MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL is a one-year program structured over five terms, each lasting approximately two months.

Terms 1 to 4: These terms are dedicated to coursework, covering core subjects and electives that build foundational and advanced knowledge in applied linguistics and TESOL.

Term 5: The final term is allocated for the development of a comprehensive Teaching Portfolio. During this period, students compile and reflect upon their teaching experiences, methodologies, and materials, demonstrating their readiness for professional practice.

This structure allows for an immersive learning experience, balancing theoretical instruction with practical application, and culminating in a portfolio that showcases the student's competencies and growth throughout the program.

Entry requirements

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited institution (minimum 180 ECTS credits) or a higher academic qualification (degree course format should be full-time or part-time)

English language requirements

Proficiency in the English language as evidenced by one of the below:

  • IELTS 6.0 or higher
  • TOEFL iBT 60 or higher

Note: We accept only the TOEFL iBT taken at approved test centers. We do not accept the TOEFL iBT Home Edition.

  • CEFR B2 (56-60)

Applicants who have completed their bachelor’s degree entirely in English do not need to provide any additional proof of language proficiency.
