Course Duration

The MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL is a one-year program structured over five terms, each lasting approximately two months.

Terms 1 to 4: These terms are dedicated to coursework, covering core subjects and electives that build foundational and advanced knowledge in applied linguistics and TESOL.

Term 5: The final term is allocated for the development of a comprehensive Teaching Portfolio. During this period, students compile and reflect upon their teaching experiences, methodologies, and materials, demonstrating their readiness for professional practice.

This structure allows for an immersive learning experience, balancing theoretical instruction with practical application, and culminating in a portfolio that showcases the student's competencies and growth throughout the program.

Course Structure

The program consists of 180 UK credits (ECTS 90 credits) distributed over one year full-time.

Classes are expected to be held three times a week, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

It includes:

Modules: Foundational topics in applied linguistics and TESOL. (150 UK credits) Practicum (30 UK credits)

• Support Career Progression: Equip graduates with the academic and professional competencies required for leadership roles, specialized teaching positions, or further academic study in applied linguistics and TESOL.

There is no dissertation at the end of the course. Instead, there is a Teaching and Research Portfolio module.

Teaching and Research Portfolio module challenges, you to create a comprehensive Integrated Teaching and Research Portfolio that demonstrates your ability to connect and align your teaching practices with your research endeavors. The portfolio will serve as a reflective and evidence-based showcase of your dual role as an educator and researcher, highlighting how these two domains inform and enhance each other.

Through this portfolio, you will:

• Document your teaching experiences, strategies, and materials developed during your practicum.
• Present your research contributions, including projects, proposals, or findings.
• Reflect on the intersection of teaching and research, showcasing how scholarly inquiry shapes your teaching philosophy and classroom practices.
• The goal is to emphasize the synergy between pedagogical methods and scholarly pursuits, demonstrating your professional growth and contribution to the field of education.

Learning and Teaching Methods

• Lectures and Seminars: Theoretical frameworks and discussion of key topics.
• Workshops: Practical application of teaching methods and research skills.
• Independent Study: Guided readings and assignments.
• Collaborative Projects: Group work on language teaching and research tasks.

Term 1 (8 weeks+1-week break)

• Foundations of Applied Linguistics (20 credits)
• Second Language Acquisition (SLA) (20 credits)

Term 2 (8 weeks+1-week break)

• TESOL course (Teaching skills and Language awareness & skills) (20 credits)
• Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (20 credits)

Term 3 (8 weeks+1-week break)

• Language, Culture and Communication (15 credits)
• TESOL course (The Learner profile, The materials assignment and The unknown language) (20 credits)

Term 4 (8 weeks+1-week break)

• Materials Design and Technology (15 credits)
• Assessment and Evaluation in TESOL (20 credits)
• Pedagogical Internship in the institutions

Term 5 (8 weeks)

• Teaching and Research Portfolio (30 credits)

In Term 4, students will begin their Practicum in institutions. During Term 5, they will prepare their portfolio and submit it.

Entry requirements

• Bachelor degree from an accredited institution (minimum 180 ECTS credits) or a higher academic qualification (degree course format should be full-time or part-time)

English language requirements

Proficiency in the English language as evidenced by one of the below:

• IELTS 6.0 or higher
• TOEFL iBT 60 or higher

Note: We accept only the TOEFL iBT taken at approved test centers. We do not accept the TOEFL iBT Home Edition.

• CEFR B2 (56-60)

Applicants who have completed their bachelor’s degree entirely in English do not need to provide any additional proof of language proficiency.
