Dr. Moulay-Rachid Babaa is a materials scientist and chemical engineer specializing in nanomaterials for energy storage, catalytic processes, and surface science. With over 20 years of international experience, he has held faculty and leadership positions across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. He earned his MSc in Chemical Processes from Blaise Pascal University in France in 2001, followed by a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Lorraine in 2004.
Before joining New Uzbekistan University, Dr. Babaa served as the Founding Director of Studies at Arts et Métiers-ParisTech (ENSAM), Rabat campus in Morocco. Prior to this role, he was an Assistant Professor at the American University of the Middle East in Kuwait from 2019 to 2022, and a Founding Assistant Professor at Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan between 2012 and 2019. From 2008 to 2012, he worked as a Senior Lecturer at PETRONAS University of Technology in Malaysia, and earlier as a Senior Researcher at the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) from 2007 to 2008. He also completed postdoctoral fellowships at École Polytechnique de Savoie and Montpellier University between 2005 and 2007.
His research focuses on the development of energy storage materials, including lithium-ion and aqueous zinc batteries, as well as photocatalytic CO₂ conversion into fuels. He has also worked extensively on carbon nanotube functionalization and its diverse applications, and has led industrial collaborations in the fields of oil and gas as well as environmental remediation.
