EL-QANNI AMJAD

EL-QANNI AMJAD

Associate Professor

Biography

Dr. Amjad El-Qanni is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering whose work sits at the intersection of advanced materials, environmental engineering, energy systems, and sustainable technologies.

His academic journey spans the Middle East, Europe, North America, and now Central Asia. He earned his BSc in Chemical Engineering from An-Najah National University, Palestine, followed by an MSc in Urban Environmental Engineering from École Centrale de Nantes, France, and a PhD in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, specializing in Energy and Environment, from the University of Calgary, Canada.

Before joining New Uzbekistan University, Dr. El-Qanni served as an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at An-Najah National University, where he also founded and led the Academic and Professional Development Center. His academic and leadership experience includes teaching, research, student mentorship, internationalization, academic development, and coordination of large-scale international scholarship and mobility programs.

In 2026, he was selected as a Global MIT–GMAF Research Fellow, joining the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to work in Energy and Environmental Systems under the mentorship of Professor Franz-Josef Ulm. His MIT research explored advanced carbon-based materials and their potential for sustainable energy and infrastructure applications.

Dr. El-Qanni has authored and co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters, with research contributions spanning nanomaterials, adsorption and catalysis, wastewater treatment, environmental remediation, waste valorization, and sustainable materials.

He is particularly interested in research that moves from laboratory discovery to practical, scalable solutions: transforming waste into resources, pollutants into opportunities for recovery, and advanced materials into technologies that address real environmental and energy challenges.

At New Uzbekistan University, he aims to help build a vibrant research culture, mentor the next generation of scientists and engineers, and build international research partnerships that connect Uzbekistan with leading institutions and researchers worldwide.

Core Research Interests

• Advanced Functional Materials: Design and development of nanostructured, carbon- based, and hybrid materials with tailored properties for environmental and energy applications.

• Waste-to-Resource Technologies: Valorization of industrial and agricultural wastes into functional materials, adsorbents, catalysts, and energy-related materials.

• Environmental Remediation & Water Technologies: Advanced adsorption, catalysis, photodegradation, oxidation, and integrated treatment approaches for emerging contaminants and industrial wastewater.

• Carbon-Based Materials & Conductive Composites: Exploration of carbon nanomaterials and functionalized carbon-based materials for conductive cement, smart infrastructure, and energy-related applications.

• Circular Economy & Resource Recovery: Designing processes that do more than treat waste; processes that recover value from waste and return materials to productive use.
